My hair is getting too long so I decided to build a robot to cut it for me. To support future projects like this check out my patreon: patreon.com/stuffmadehere
Check out the SMH subreddit: tinyurl.com/smhere
The possibilities for this kind machine are endless with the most interesting things being haircuts that are too hard for human hair cutters to achieve. Imagine a mathematically perfect fade from one side of your head to another. Or imagine if I added a trimmer to this and cutting perfect lithopane pattern into your hair. I consider this the first generation machine and hope to build another to explore some of the crazier haircut concepts. A colleague suggested adding a precision hair dying attachment and doing some crazy multi-color hair styles. I wouldn't say that's really "my jam" but I might try it in the name of science & engineering.
This isn't just limited to humans either. Imagine sticking a poodle in this or making a bigger one to create topiaries. Lots of fun ideas....

If I build a version 2, what features should I add? I really like the idea of adding a trimmer to cut an intricate pattern that would be impossible for a human to do.
I would love to try this out with my Afro.
Are those hairdressing scissors? They look kinda like paper cutting scissors to me. Assuming you want to use scissors at all next time.
Is it possible to shild the face from a hair-line vacume and is when kinetic cutting combs move in and angulate accordingly.
How about carving the ITmores logo in your hair? ;)
I had a similar concept before using CNC but this one is missing one equipment... a STATIC GENERATOR.
This is kinda unreal. Like the fact that he engineered and programmed all this by himself! You are amazing!
He should patent it and put a bunch of barbers out of biz. lol
@Flying Eekhoorn well it was some nice side information i didnt know he breaked it down in some sentences
@Mahmoud Yahya first dont get off topic. He doesnt care about commercialized it, he only doing it for content and for fun and creating new thing. And ur comment is completely pointless. Thats literally everything else. U need money, skill, internet and time. Thats literally for anything. But how far a person can go with those resource is what make them amazing and impressive. This guy can do mechanical engineer, software engineer and even data science relating to deep learning, machine learning. He know alot and its impressive. What is ur point of the ur comment anyway? The original comment is impress about the guy talent, and are u denying that the guy is not impressive? What even is the point of ur comment
"It was really sad, my dog died." "Oh wow, cool." Just like a real hairdresser
I believe we have more empathy than a robot 🤖 😂
Can we please appreciate him giving the robot the ability to ask how you’re doing only to respond with a disingenuous and uninterested “oh wow so cool”. I love it. The realism
I still can't wrap my head around the idea that you make all of these inventions by yourself. You're skilled in so many different areas, it's pretty unbelievable.
@tay w okay, if you say so.
@Craig Armstrong It absolutely is true, i mean when i was in college pretty much anyone in the graduate engineering program could craft these things, hes not inventing anything hes just putting things together that have already been invented, which is what engineers do
@tay w That is absolutely not true
Sale me one I got barber shop I need some back up I can go over it and do the clean up
most of these things he creates is just a combination of college level mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, impressive, but there are quite a lot of people with these skills
my man does more work on one video than I'll ever do on my master's thesis. legend
It seems nobody realizes how incredible of an engineering achievement this is! He's a genius.
@Dharok makes me firmly believe that history revolutions and technology innovations mostly always lead and realize by several elite geniuses. Most human beings just in place of numbers if not hindering back progress.
Is this an unpopular opinion?
and also sacrifice his hair LOL
can we take a moment to appreciate how smooth he is making the tiniest things clear and easy beside building it?
This idea was turning around in my head for the last few years. I am so glad to see you made it. Have you thought of a design that putting a shaving machine like apparatus 1cm inside the vacuum hose? That would eliminate all these peoples fears about loosing their ears!
@Brian Lynn no he’s thinking of designing the suck cut from Wayne’s world 😂
Great job. I'm impressed with the idea, the effort, and your prototype.
You and colinfurze are amazing! The amount of resources you guys have to implement these designs is wicked. Oh and also Pablo Cimadevila
He seems to be worried it would mess up his hair I would be worried that it would cut off my ear.
Yeah…or gouge my eye out! Having a good haircut would be the least of my concerns
I was thinking... about how he should be wearing some sort of eye protection...
The hair you could just shave off if the haircut is shit, an ear tends to grow back slower. So ye it makes sense to be more worried about losing an ear.
id worry more about pokingn out my eyes
Hey man, I'm an engineering student and love your videos! You put a-lot of faith in this thing, wouldn't it have been more comforting to have a kill switch by your feet/hands?!
This is really fascinating. You work really hard and im starting to like your work. Subscribed!
Inventor: "This here robot will cut every kind of haircut you want!" Customer: "But hey, not everybody has the same head shape." Inventor: "After their first visit, they will."
My wife is a hairdresser and I think you are on to something big. You still have a little ways to go but this is a great start. Just imagine robotic haircut booths at malls 5 years from now. Version 2 please!
This guy trusts this robot more than I trust my self with anything.
@KittyCola 99 o yeah
Domino's Pizza Miku ^_^
@RAAFIL 2524_ LOL
That's sad..
it is not easy to trust yourself just enough to be confident when you are right and doubting when you are wrong but it is in the range of achievable
dude, the work u do is amazing. it's brilliant. keep up the invention work
Aside from the areas it wasn’t able to get to, I’m amazed how even and clean it cut. Great job!
Absolutely genius. Fascinating to watch your creation process.
There is no way I'm letting a bot cut my hair. But it's still so cool you made that and there's definitely a market for this. Brilliant!
can't believe a teen made all this himself, so impressive
Can't believe the amount of people that got rtwoooshed in this reply section-
AND he has a wife... like WOW
and....he's got a wife too!!! o tempora! o mores!
Man he has wife 😂😂 I know he looks like 18 24 year old 😂😂
@potato tots r/Wooosh!
idk I'd have felt safer in there with eye protection 😂 completely insane build though nice one :)
I have actually been working on a concept sorta like this. I’m a hairdresser with 32 years experience in business and the art of hairdressing and am looking to speak to someone like you to brainstorm some ideas. Let me know if you are interested in taking this project to higher levels!
Robot cuts his ear off: Him in a monotone voice: *So the robot did fairly well, it did attempt to trim the length of my ear so now I have to reprogram it but all in all not bad stuff.*
Its ok, it'll grow back. All it takes is time.
Good for him, he can make a better ear for himself. He knows that and hence, no worries.
First video I watched in this channel and I immediately became a fan. The second video I watched was V2 and he became my favorite youtuber. Great content, presentation and humor. Keep it up!!!
How does this guy only have 250k subs??? Keep up the work my dude. You'll be at a million in no time
kinda amazing that he got to 3.5 Mil in a year and a half
He's at 3 MILLION now!
3.25
2.94M and counting
2.6 mil now
This is brilliant 😍 good job
This reminds me of those old vacuum hair cutters from way back... I think it was around the 80s. I think they still sell them. Yours does more of the work though. Plus, yours gives more of the barbershop experience of having your hair "combed", etc.
I admire your ingenuity, keep trying, most inventors have to test many times before they can perfect anything.
You r brilliant. It's not everyone's cup of tea to has knowledge of each field of engineering like electronics, mechanical, programming.
Imagine it grabbing your ear and cut it off . He’s gonna be like “damn another bug to fix “
What if he decides to cut his pub hair with that
@Laurin Neff laughing my ear off 0.0
He could just name it the "Van Gogh cut" and leave the rest to the ITmores algorithm.
that's what Van Gogh said ..
I remember this guy I worked with back in the early 1980's. We all thought he was kind of a nut, but he would tell anyone who would listen about this robotic hair cutting machine he invented. From the looks of his hair, I don't think it worked very well... He also talked about an invention of his (his name was Ray), which he said was a radio wave laser driven by a two-phase power source. We called it the "RAYZER-TWO-PHASER". LOL.
This is amazing!! I hope this thing can eventually be developped to be a comercial product that we can just stick our head into a machine and then get whatever hair style we want with a really cheap price!
many people would loose they're jobs
Unbelievable - as an engineer I know, how much work an engineering a project like this is. GERAT JOB MAN!!!!! Best regards from Germany Nico from Nico's Projects
he did not only build it but he also programmed all by himself, teach himself how to cut hair and then thought of a safety way for the robot to cut hair
Do you realize you’re probably the first person in human history to get a haircut by a robot ?
Hair cut? 😂
No he is not
@IndigoGollum Example from 2012: phys.org/news/2012-03-iais-military-robot-barber-charity.html and there are even older simpler ones.
@David Mulder When was this?
The first person died in the attempt
The fact that he doesn't wear protective glasses while a robot with scissors is moving around his head really shows his confidence in his engineering abilities..
I had a similar concept before using CNC but this one is missing one equipment... a STATIC GENERATOR.
There's a Cold War era joke about this! An American and a Soviet general meet and brag about their latest technology. The Soviet says: "In the Soviet army we use robots to cut the hair of conscripts! They walk in, put their heads into a dome, it takes just ten seconds, and they're done!" "Wow, that's amazing. But people don't have identically shaped heads, do they?" "Well, initially they don't."
😂😂😂
Russian humour.
This is soooo brilliant. I was laughinng so hard... Not only a fantastic invention, but the comedy was great too. Well done!
Looks 16. Makes a robot that cuts hair. Now looks like 16 with shorter hair. Loved it.
bet you did bud
*16 yr old that does weed
When you said "Cut around my ear" I shrieked like a demon. You've helped me discover a whole new phobia: robots cutting my ears off with scissors.
wow, great work!! however, at first glance, it looked like a very sophisticated, state-of-the-art guillotine:)
I don't know how you come up with these ideas. This is ingenious!
You made this thing cut your head with scissors. You're the bravest engineer in the world. I'd have been terrified it was gonna cut my ears off the whole time.
Look at his face as he’s getting it cut lol he looks petrified
I can't believe this guy is real, it's like he's from a movie
He’s like the uncle who takes you more places than your parents
Yeah, definitely Rick Moranis, from Honey I Shrunk The Kids.
@Jimmy Luffnin Btw Its 'Jimmy Loughnan". Look. The bloke's been me best mate since 1975. We've had our fallouts from time to time, it's no big deal. Y'know, it's like... if ya mum stabs ya, whaddya do? Y-ya don't get upset. Ya don't get angry, ya go, "Shit, mum's stabbed me, I better get off to the hospital."
Incredible idea. Imagine a refined version of this. It would become a standard appliance in every bathroom.
Great job man, amazing stuff to watch, but this might kill barber profession in our future :(
Woaw - you are so talented!💪 Very innovative👏👏👏
I drew a rough prototype of this project in middle school about 12 years ago for a class. Weird to see years later someone actually did it and youtube recommended it to me.
I really admire this guy: he’s doing stuff so above most people’s heads (including mine) hardware and software engineer + construction and fabricator and other skills.... I mean the dude is a man all around genius engineer
